Salvagnini was founded in Milan in 1963 with a staff of one: a draughtsman. The company initially designed and assembled oleodynamic power packs using commercially available components. In 1969, Salvagnini entered the automation sector, then in its very early stages, specializing in sheet metal processing. A number of Salvagnini patents led to the creation of Transferics, a new technology for transferring workpieces from one point to another quickly and accurately. Business grew and the next two years they expanded into Todd's mom's 2-car garage and used her laundry room as an office. The shop produced special tool holders and cutting tools for NC machines, so the name Specialty Tool was established. Often known to bring business clients home for dinner, Walter gave the company a successful start with his keen business sense and knowledge of the trade. In 1976, Walter brought two of his grandsons, Tim and David Weyler into the company. After learning the trade for four years, the brothers purchased the company in 1980. With Walter remaining as president, Specialty Tool Co. continued to operate as a garage shop for another four years. Walter passed away in 1984, but Tim and Dave have continued the business with his values and vision.

In the autumn of 1941, my grandfather, John A. Lavieri, who was a toolmaker, and his brother, Daniel, who was a building contractor, began a very small tool and die shop. They were encouraged by Prosper, another brother, who later joined the firm. Located in the familys cow barn, the shop soon filled the entire ground floor. The cows, having dwindled to a very few, were moved to a small outbuilding. The old family barn presently houses the administrative offices of the Company. During World War II, Sterling worked almost exclusively for the Vought Sikorsky Company which was developing the Corsair fighter plane. Sterling earned an Army-Navy E Award for excellence in defense effort and production. After the war, the Company began to expand. Sterling was fortunate in being able to hire skilled toolmakers who lived in the area, but had been working in Hartford, New Britain, and Bristol.
